Best Practices for Data Protection in Wake of Equifax® Data Breach

On September 7th, Equifax® announced that the records of approximately 143 million U.S. consumers were compromised in one of the most extensive security breaches to ever be made public. The information leaked primarily includes names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some case, driver’s license numbers. Furthermore, the credit card numbers for about 209,000 people, and certain dispute documents for another 182,000 people, were also accessed.

Protecting our customers’ identities is our number one concern and as such, we are recommending all customers take the following steps to safeguard their data.

Find Out if You’ve Been Impacted

Equifax® has set up a new website to help customers check whether their data has been compromised. To see if you have been impacted by this breach, visit https://www.equifaxsecurity2017.com/potential-impact/ and follow the instructions. Please note that even if you have been impacted by this breach, this does not mean that identity fraud has been committed in your name. However, it does mean that you are at a greater risk for potential future identity fraud and you should take some additional steps to protect your information.

Place a Credit Fraud Alert

We recommend that our customers place a 90 day fraud alert with all credit bureaus. In some cases, this alert can even be extended to seven years at your request. This will prevent any creditors from opening a new line of credit in your name for the next 90 days (or seven years) without first contacting you for your approval. To do so:

  1. Call 1-800-680-7289
  2. Select option 1
  3. Follow the automated prompt instructions

Once you’ve done this, our credit partner TransUnion® will notify the other 2 major credit bureaus. This step will warn lenders that you may have been a fraud victim and they will contact you directly before any new loan or credit is established in your name. The alert will stay on your credit report for 90 days and you can renew it when it expires.

Utilize Your Credit & Identity Monitoring

Your service includes automatic enrollment in Identity Monitoring. Our internet surveillance monitors the underground economy to uncover this information if bought, sold, or otherwise exposed, and alert you if it is. Credit monitoring, which includes access to reports and score, is also available as a part of your service. We are encouraging all customers to ensure that they have enrolled in credit monitoring which will identify new credit inquiries, address changes or new credit opened in your name.

Install the Online Data Protection Suite

After headline grabbing breaches like this, it’s also common for those affected to receive an influx of phishing emails supposedly from the organization breached or other trusted service providers. To help protect against such threats, we recommend all customers with identity & digital protection products that include our Online Data Protection suite install it on their PCs.

Access 24/7 Resolution Service

If customers would like guidance on completing these steps or assistance with any other concerns they have, our Resolution Center is here to provide personalized support 24/7, every day of the year. Customers should call the designated assistance phone number provided to them in their program materials. Our 24/7 Identity Theft Resolution team is standing by to assist.
